Tempering Greed

"When he finds a pearl great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it."
Matthew 13:46

Not too long ago, I operated a business that rented foreclosed equipment from the banks. For 10 years, the business made lots of money. Then at one point, the bank offered to sell me the equipment with a loan grant of over P100 million. It was a tempting offer, and since it had given me much income in the past, I made all the justifications to acquire the equipment. Thankfully, through my wife's advice and by God's grace, I overcame my selfish desire and turned down the offer to purchase the said equipment.

In less than two years, the business lost two thirds of its market. Had I pursued my selfish desires, I would have been left with an enterprise that barely made money and had huge bank obligations. I would probably be worried sick today, thinking about my enormous debt and impaired in my ability and availability to serve God.

I was pursuing a wordly treasure and God saved me from myself. He gave me wisdom and good discernment about who my real treasure is - Jesus, the Pearl of Great Price.
